Information

  • Tom Stringer is a photographer based in Beacon New York. Born and raised in upstate New York, Tom spent much of his free time driving around the reservoirs, hiking and taking in the landscape. His work is predominately made using analog mediums and vintage cameras.

  • My work consists mainly of landscapes and documentary studies. The two genres, their approaches, and processes mirror convictions and intentions in my work.

Creating landscapes is a slow and intentional process, echoing the pace of the land itself. This method emulates the powerful, immovable qualities of nature, likening it to a deity and affording it the highest honor. Every step of the process is meticulously checked to avoid disgracing the beauty and majesty of the land. The photos are crafted in an effort to connect emotion to the forms of the earth, for the sake of preservation.

Documentary photography is precisely the opposite. It is fast and unforgiving, much like the unattractive truths it aims to unveil. By developing focused bodies of work that serve as a material analysis of the present time and space, photos can both pose questions and attempt to answer them. Images of love, hate, monotony, and chaos can prompt consideration of what is to be done while suggesting that a better world is possible.
